Plan Nord –
Employment Prospects
The Plan Nord is a sustainable development project that integrates energy, mining, forest, bio-food, tourism and transportation development, the development of wildlife, environmental protection and the preservation of biodiversity. It fosters development for the benefit of the communities concerned and Québec as a whole, in a spirit of respect for cultures and identities.
The Plan Nord covers all of Québec's territory north of the 49th parallel and north of the St. Lawrence River and the Gulf of St. Lawrence, except for Anticosti Island. This territory encompasses the Nord-du-Québec region, most of the Côte-Nord region and the northern part of the Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean region1.
From 2011 to 2015, 34 700 jobs will need to be filled in the three administrative regions covered by the Plan Nord, representing 5% of all the jobs to be filled throughout Québec. Many of these jobs will require secondary-level vocational training or college-level technical training. Several industries will experience strong growth during this period, and not exclusively ones in the natural resources sector.
