Description :

Community and social service workers administer and implement a variety of social assistance programs and community services, and assist clients to deal with personal and social problems. They are employed by social service and government agencies, mental health agencies, group homes, school boards, correctional facilities and other establishments.

Main duties :

  • interview clients to obtain case history and background information;
  • assist clients to sort out options and develop plans of action while providing necessary support and assistance;
  • assist clients in locating and utilizing community resources including legal, medical, financial assistance, housing, employment, transportation, assistance with moves, day care and other referral services;
  • counsel clients living in group homes and half-way houses, supervise their activities and assist in pre-release and release planning;
  • co-ordinate the volunteer activities of human service agencies, health care facilities and arts and sports organizations.

The technicians in special care counselling intervene concerning different problems: physical or psychological deficiencies, behaviour problems, mental or health-related problems, and after having taken care of adapting them, their re-integration to society

Youth and adult correctional intervention

Program length : 3 years

Program Objectives

The Youth and Adult Correctional Intervention program trains technicians in the fields of delinquency prevention and the social integration of delinquents, working with delinquents both before they commit offences and after the application of court decisions or non-judicial measures. The technician will have daily interaction directly with youth and adults both before and after a delinquent act, with both men and women, or with victims of a criminel act. The technician will work in closed environments, semi- and open environments, mainly in provincial or federal detention facilities, residential centres, youth centres or different community organizations.
