Description :

Firefighters carry out firefighting and fire prevention activities, and assist in other emergencies. They are employed by municipal, provincial and federal governments and by large industrial establishments that have internal firefighting services.

Main duties :

  • respond to fire alarms and other calls for assistance, such as automobile and industrial accidents, bomb threats and other emergencies;
  • rescue victims from burning buildings and accident sites;
  • control and extinguish fires using manual and power equipment, such as axes, water hoses, aerial ladders and hydraulic equipment and various firefighting chemicals;
  • administer first-aid and other assistance;
  • ensure proper operation and maintenance of firefighting equipment;
  • inform and educate the public on fire prevention;
  • train to maintain high level of physical fitness;
  • assist the public, the police and emergency organizations during times of major disasters;
  • may participate as members of a trauma or emergency response team and provide para-medical aid to accident victims or ill persons;
  • may supervise and co-ordinate the work of other firefighters.

Fire Safety Techniques

Program lenght : just over 1 year

Program Objectives

Firefighters participate as members of a team in protecting persons and property as well as in fighting fires using the standard and specialized materials required. For emergencies other than fires, firefighters assist communities hit by natural or industrial disasters in order to minimize impact on lives, property or the environment. In terms of rescue operations, firefighters participate in search activities, dispense first aid and evacuate victims.

Program objectives

Le programme d’études Techniques de sécurité incendie vise à former des pompiers ou pompières aptes à travailler dans les agglomérations à forte densité de population ainsi que dans les villes centres ayant un parc industriel d’envergure. Dans les agglomérations à forte densité de population, les champs d’intervention des pompiers et pompières présentent des caractéristiques particulières nécessitant une réponse adaptée aux besoins. Dans l’exercice de leurs fonctions, les pompiers et pompières sont appelés à agir dans toutes les circonstances, en fonction de risques nouveaux, mais bien réels, qu'il s'agisse des risques sociaux (terrorisme), naturels ou technologiques, et ce, à l'intérieur d'un parc immobilier urbain qui évolue rapidement sur le plan de la construction et de la vocation des bâtiments. Ces personnes agissent dans une optique d'optimisation des services de sécurité incendie, en fonction de leur expertise (capacité d'intervenir dans des endroits particuliers et dangereux, capacité d'utiliser de l'équipement spécialisé, etc.) et à partir d'une chaîne de commandement unifiée, au moment d'opérations de sécurité civile.
