Description :
Interior designers conceptualize and produce aesthetic, functional and safe designs for interior spaces in residential, commercial, cultural, institutional and industrial buildings. They are employed by architectural firms, interior design firms, retail establishments, construction companies, hospitals, airlines, hotel and restaurant chains, and other establishments or they may be self-employed.
Main duties :
- Consult with clients to determine needs, preferences, safety requirements and purpose of space;
- Develop detailed plans and 3-D models showing arrangement of walls, dividers, displays, lighting and other fixtures using computer-assisted design (CAD) software and graphics software;
- Develop plans, elevations, cross sections and detailed drawings, and advise on selection of colours, finishes and materials, floor and wall coverings, interior and exterior lighting, furniture and other items, taking into account ergonomic and occupational health standards;
- Estimate costs and materials required and may advise on leasing, real estate and marketing;
- Prepare plans and specifications for the final interior designs in accordance with current practices and codes.
Interior designers may specialize in designing interiors for residential, commercial, institutional, cultural and industrial buildings and for aircraft, ships or trains, trade shows and exhibitions.

Program Objectives
Le programme d'études Décoration intérieure et présentation visuelle vise à former des décoratrices ou des décorateurs d'intérieur et des étalagistes.
Les décoratrices ou les décorateurs d'intérieur procéderont à la planification et à la gestion de projets de décoration, tenant compte des besoins de leur client, particulier ou commercial. Ils pratiquent leur métier principalement comme employés de centres de décoration ou de commerces de détail, mais peuvent également être travailleuses ou travailleurs autonomes.
Les étalagistes procéderont à la planification et la gestion de projets d'étalage, de la mise en marché de produits de vente de détail à la présentation de stand d'exposition. Principalement employées et employés par des entreprises de commerce de détail ou de services spécialisés en présentation visuelle, ces professionnelles et ces professionnels peuvent également pratiquer à titre de travailleuses et de travailleurs autonomes.
Dans les deux cas, ces professionnelles et ces professionnels pourront accomplir des tâches de conception et de conseils, notamment celles et ceux qui exercent dans un contexte de commerces de détail. Program Objectives
This program aims to train interior designers to create, develop and suggest functional and esthetic interior design and layout concepts for homes, commercial and industrial establishments and, as well as, public establishments. These students will also prepare design plans and will participate in the work coordination; they will also follow the quality of the execution of the project and make sure it is conform to the applicable standards and codes.
Interior designers work for interior design companies, real estate agents, architects, furniture stores, decorator centres, cabinet manufacturers, etc. These specialists may also work as independant contractors. The field of interior design relies more and more on computers in their every day work.
