Machining Tool Operators

Description :

Machining tool operators set up and operate or tend metal-cutting machines designed for repetitive machining work. They are employed by metal products and other manufacturing companies and in machine shops. This unit group also includes workers who etch or chemically mill metal pieces.

Main duties :

  • study job orders or interpret blueprints to determine machining operations to be performed;
  • set up and operate machine tools to perform repetitive machining operations, such as turning, milling, drilling, boring, planning, honing, broaching, grinding or other machining operations;
  • verify dimensions of parts machined using micrometers, calipers and other precision measuring instruments;
  • prepare etching solution and immerse metal parts or workpiece in etching solution to remove unwanted portions;
  • perform routine maintenance on equipment and machinery.

Production Equipment Operation

Program length : 1 year

Program Objectives

The Production Equipment Operation program is designed to train individuals to apply, in whole or in part, the process for manufacturing a product. These individuals will be able to prepare raw and processed materials and machinery; operate conventional or automated production equipment; ensure quality control of manufactured products; handle raw materials and products; prepare products for shipping; and carry out preventive maintenance on the equipment made available to them.

To develop in the students the basic competencies required to carry out machining tasks, to perform machining tasks on conventional machine tools, to perform programming tasks, to perform machining tasks on numerical control machine tools, to actively participate in multidisciplinary teams and to integrate harmoniously into the school and work environments.

Occupation targeted under the Workplace Apprenticeship Program.

This program was created by Commission des partenaires du marché du travail and Emploi-Québec in partnership with sector-based labor force committees.

It supports workplace apprenticeship and skill recognition programs.

Training and skill evaluation are under the supervision of an experienced worker. Once the apprenticeship is finished and skills are mastered by the apprentice, a certificate of qualification is issued and recorded in a government registry.
